What is a power surge?

A power surge is a sudden, very short increase in voltage. Though usually small and unnoticed by the resident, over time these surges can be damaging to your sensitive electronic equipment and appliances. In an average home, these small surges can occur many times a day.

What causes power surges?

Power surges can be caused by common disturbances on electric utility lines. These include tree limbs brushing the lines, birds or animals contacting the lines, auto accidents and weather related instances involving lightning, wind or ice. Your home's wiring and appliances, however, cause many power surges. Refrigerators, freezers, furnaces, hair dryers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, air compressors, air conditioners and power tools are just a few items responsible for creating surges. Other causes of power surges are poor grounding, loose wiring connections, bad wiring situations and overloaded circuits.

How may power surges enter my home?

  • Over your electrical power lines
  • Over your telephone
  • Over your TV antenna or satellite dish cable
  • Over your outside plumbing

What can I do to guard against power surges?

Make sure you have proper grounding. According to the National Electrical Code, a properly wired system will measure 25 ohms or less at the grounding point. All utility and equipment grounds must be bonded together at one grounding point.
